6 simple ways to care for your voice
Have you ever lost your voice before and were unsure how to care for it? Give these strategies a go!
HYDRATE
Drinking water consistently throughout the day helps to moisten and protect the vocal cords. Aim for 8-10 glasses of water daily!
REST
Rest your voice regularly throughout the day. Your vocal cords need rest to avoid straining.
LIMIT IRRITANTS
Exposure to certain irritants can cause strain or inflammation of the vocal cords. Consider limiting the following - smoking, coffee, alcohol, spicy or fried foods and harsh chemicals.
BREATHE
Deep or diaphragmatic breathing (breathing from the diaphragm) supports vocal control, clarity and volume. Practice this daily to care for your voice.
PROTECT
Yelling, shouting, whispering, excessive throat clearing and coughing can irritate the vocal cords, leading to fatigue. Reducing these behaviours will protect your voice!
PREPARE
Warming up your vocal cords before speaking/presenting/performing can help prevent strain. Try gentle humming, lip trills or simple scales to prepare.
Whether you’re a teacher, performer, presenter or someone who just loses their voice sometimes - these strategies are for you. Incorporate these into your daily routine and let us know if they help!
