Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I need a Speech Pathologist?
Determining whether you might need an SP involves recognising signs and symptoms relating to communication and/or swallowing difficulties. Here are some indicators that may suggest need for an SP:
Speech difficulties (slurred or slow speech; incorrect production of speech sounds/words; others find it difficult to understand your speech)
Language difficulties (difficulty expressing yourself; word-finding difficulties; difficulty understanding others or following instructions; troubles with reading or writing)
Cognitive-communication difficulties (difficulty with memory, attention, organisational skills or problem-solving)
Voice difficulties (voice sounding different to usual; hoarse, rough, strained vocal quality; changes in pitch or volume)
Fluency difficulties (stuttering)
Swallowing difficulties (throat clearing, coughing, choking, wet-sounding voice when eating or drinking; difficulty chewing foods)
Social communication (difficulty with conversational skills, perspective-taking or emotional regulation; reduced understanding of non-verbal communication, e.g., facial expressions)

How do I get started?
No referral needed! Simply reach out to the team via the ‘contact’ page, tell us a bit about you, why you are wanting Speech Pathology input, and how we can assist! From there, we will guide you through the process and answer any questions you have.
What can I expect?
During your initial Speech Pathology session, we will discuss your concerns and conduct a comprehensive assessment of your communication and/or swallowing. We will collaborate together to develop personalised goals, an ongoing treatment plan and discuss any recommendations following the assessment. If you are only wanting an initial assessment with recommendations (without ongoing SP input), we can provide this as well.
How long do sessions go for?
Typically, an initial session will be billed for 90 minutes. This includes 70 minutes face-to-face, with the remaining 20 minutes used for documentation and follow-up.
Follow-up sessions are typically billed for 60 minutes. This includes 45 minutes face-to-face, with the remaining 15 minutes used for documentation and follow-up.
How much support will I need?
Frequency of sessions and duration of input is largely dependent on the individual’s needs, the severity of difficulties and progress made. Some individuals may see improvement over a few sessions, however, others may require long-term input. Our team can provide you with further clarity on this after discussing your individual needs. So please, reach out via the ‘contact’ page if you would like to know more!
